CEREC Technology – Get Crowns in One Day!

Closeup of a ct scan in blue colorsC.E.R.E.C. or “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics is a computer design system that was developed in the 1980s by Drs. Marco Brandestini and Werner Mormann, both professors. The process allows dentists to construct ceramic tooth replacements in their office or “chairside,” rather than sending impressions and measurements off to a lab for construction. About 38,000 dentists around the world have implemented the CEREC method since 1985 and more than 6.9 million restorations are performed every year.

If you are interested in CEREC restorations, contact All Smiles Dental today at (803) 356-0700.

How is it done?

To perform CEREC restorations and CAD/CAM procedures, a dentist:

  • Takes digital impressions of a patient using digital radiographs, a CT scan or other digital scanners. One or more types of scanners can be used.
  • A three-dimensional model is then computer-generated.
  • Equipment to manufacture the restoration, such as 3D printers, are used to create the ceramic tooth replacement.

Dentists without manufacturing equipment can still send images to a lab instantly through the Internet, and the lab can then begin construction.

The Benefits of CEREC

Once the restoration is constructed, it can be fitted, adjusted and installed right away. This innovative new dental procedure allows patients to receive their restoration in days instead of weeks. Because the dentist completes all the steps in the office, he or she can finish restorations in a fraction of the time it used to take using the traditional methods. This means the reconstruction procedure is completed quickly and with fewer office visits.

Other benefits include:

  • The possibility to complete the restoration in one office visit.
  • A cost-effective option.
  • Less discomfort and injections during the procedure.
  • Ceramic restorations last longer and look more natural.
  • More color options mean a closer match of the restoration to surrounding teeth.
  • Digital impressions allow for more accuracy and detail for replacements, without the need for molds or other paraphernalia in the patient’s mouth.
  • Digital impressions are easier to take, with less discomfort to the patient.
  • Less time spent on adjustments and follow-up.

Studies show that CEREC restorations have a 95.5 percent success rate within the first decade. When used in conjunction with 3D X-ray technology, CEREC techniques can be used to create dental implants, prosthetics and drilling guides to help dentists plan an implant procedure.

What Composes CEREC Restorations?

  • Crowns, inlays, veneers and other single tooth restorations are made of feldspar and glass ceramics.
  • Oxide ceramics and infiltration ceramics are used to make bridges and crown copings to be used in the side and front areas of the mouth where more strength and flexibility are required.

The Cost

Our staff can discuss funding options for CEREC restorations. Depending on insurance coverage, the cost will vary as not all dental insurances will cover cosmetic procedures. Our office may be able to help create a finance plan to spread out the total cost over monthly payments Otherwise, it may be possible to set a schedule to complete individual procedures as the patient’s budget allows.

We at All Smiles Dental offers CEREC restorations as part of our many other dental services. Please call (803) 356-0700 to find out more.
